Got sick trees? Do they look diseased? It could be Borers! The most destructive pest for trees, are by far the infamous Borers. They can attack just about any hardwood tree, including: Oaks, Ash trees, Maples, Sycamores, Magnolias, Pecan trees, Pear trees, Willows, Elms, Sweet Gums, and so many more! They don’t attack Pine Trees; however, they have a nasty cousin called Pine Bark Beetles that destroy Pine Trees, and FAST! Both Borers and Pine Beetles have been know to wipe out an entire forest, and/or all of a Home Owner’s trees.
The picture reveals the inner workings of Borers activity, as they tunnel in through the bark, into the cambium layer. This layer is where the xylem and phloem translocate the nutrients throughout the tree. The tunnels that Borers create, hinder the flow of water and nutrients (both up and down the tree) thus killing the tree rapidly. The tree basically starves to death.
Borers usually attack trees after the Tree has become stressed, for any number of reasons (i.e.— drought, too much water, too little of water, cut roots, compact soil, bad soil, lightening strike, construction, etc.). Borers often don’t stop with one tree, but can spread from tree to tree, endangering all of your trees. Trees can die in as little as days to weeks, unless professional treatments from a Certified Arborist are performed quickly. Keep in mind, the cost of removing a dead tree (that was not treated in time), usually cost around 10X times greater, than the average cost of a Tree Medics tree treatment.
Small holes are often visible on the bark where Borers have entered the tree, and at times, what looks to be “sawdust” may be seen piling up against the bark of the tree. These are sure signs of a Borer Infestation, and a Professional Treatment is needed immediately. If you see small holes in your bark, sawdust on the trunk, or branches that have lost their leaves… DON’T WAIT… call Tree Medics at 346-498-9926 TODAY!
There are many types of Borers, but 6 main types: Roundhead Borers, Flathead Borers, Metallic Borers, Longhorn Borers, Weevils (or, Clearwing Borers), and Pyralid Borers. If you’re curious of their destructive powers, simply google this question: “how many trees have been killed by Emerald Ash Borers”. As of 2023 - 40 million Ash trees have been killed in Michigan alone by the Emerald Ash Borer, and millions more throughout the US and Canada. That’s just one Borer type.
